Yamdrok-Tso (羊卓雍湖), or known as Sheep Lake, also Swan Pool, is the fresh water lake of highest altitude in the world and one of the three holy lakes in Tibet, located at 4,410 above sea level and about 100 kilometers to southwest Lhasa. There are more than ten islands in the lake of which some bigger ones can accommodate about five or six households. Yamdrok-Tso will begin to be frozen in middle November, ice may accumulate to about 0.5 meter thick on the lake surface. Fishery resources are very rich. Swans, doves and other birds are seen in the middle lake islands. It is recommended to pay attention to towering snow peaks stood in the west of the lake.

Once upon a time, Yamdrok-Tso had been formed after descending of a fairy from the Heaven. Also, a legend is told that Yamdrok-Tso had been a small well. One day, Dawa, a servant to a wealthy family had saved a pretty but small goldfish in the well from fatality. The goldfish became a beautiful girl who gave a treasure gift to the house servant in return. The rich master saw the young girl and wanted Dawa to take him to find her but refused. He drowned the servant and suddenly the beautiful appeared in front of him. By a very brief magic spell, she became a powerful wave drowned him to death. Since then, Yamdrok-Tso became a big and crystal-clear lake.
Tibetan cuisine is not so often seen in downtown Shigatse but spicy Sichuan style restaurants are all around, dishes are very cheap. If you like to taste authentic Tibetan food, you can go to remote areas where locals living.
Entertainment in Shigatse is well connected with Tibetan festivals. Local farmers will sing and dance passionately during celebration in Tibetan New Year. Shigatse is also the place of origin in Tibetan drama, “Wencheng Princess” and some works about local history are popular at home and abroad.
No airport in Shigatse that Lhasa is the nearest available. It takes a 400 kilometers coach ride that as far as Shigatse.
Traffic in urban area of Shigatse is good, at least you can walk as far as to your desired destinations with ease because the city is quite small. Rickshaw charges you about 3 RMB and starting fare for taxi is 10 RMB.
Border license must be obtained when travel to Motuo, Zhangmu, Yadong, Dingri Mt. Everest and some remote places in Ngari.

Tourists at home and abroad like Shigatse a lot, therefore hotels of different standards are being available, room prices are ranging from 25 to 200 RMB. Three-star Shigatse Hotel, at 13 Jiefang Middle Road, a standard room is 200 or 300 RMB a night. Most of the hotels are having good quality services. However, due to the harsh environment and limited resources, travelers should pay attention that hot water supply would be subjected to rationing. Hotels in the relatively remote regions are fair too.
